Beef sales and breeding stock are natural complements to each other.  Any calves that don’t meet our standards of being in the top of the breed for a balance of marbling, tenderness, disposition, growth and moderate mature size have a ready outlet as Wild Type Ranch Beef.  

Because we harvest, sell and eat our own pasture-raised beef, we are acutely aware of the economic impact of genetics affecting marbling, tenderness, growth, disposition, cow size and mothering ability.  Our selection program is focused on carcass quality (including tenderness) and production, but not at the expense of cattle that are easy to work and easy to keep.  Wild Type Ranch genetics will perform as bulls or replacement females and produce calves that will grade in the beef supply chain. 

Wild Type Ranch Breeding Program       

Genetic improvement is serious business at Wild Type Ranch.  It takes top genetics on both sides of the pedigree to produce predictable performance.  We collect data on each breeding or beef animal an growth rate, body dimension, disposition and , carcass merit (via ultrasound, DNA and taste-tests).  Our breeding herd is critically evaluated on all of these traits, plus fertility to help us select truly functional cattle.  Only a the top few bull calves get to become herd bulls each year.


The Wild Type Ranch Selection Program is balanced for the following traits:

* Carcass quality, including tenderness
* Growth and muscling through weaning and yearling
* Cow efficiency, via mature cow size and % calf weight weaned
* Controlled birth weight
* Disposition
* Soundness and structural integrity
* Heifer fertility

The Wild Type Ranch Herd Health Program provides you with healthy, reliable, productive cattle:

* Calf vaccinations at weaning and yearling with modified live virus for respiratory and reproductive diseases
* All yearling and older bulls are fertility tested prior to sale
* Individual health records provided on each animal purchased
* Bulls and females developed on pasture, not feedlots

Our Culling Philosophy ensures only top-quality broodstock get to bear the Wild Type Ranch brand:

* Our calves are produced by artificial insemination to proven carcass-based bulls or Natural Service to one of our home-raised bulls that has proven himself to be efficient on grass, fertile and with a good disposition.
* Our Pastured Angus Beef program means all animals have a place in our marketing.  Only top-quality cattle get to enter our breeding herd.
* Bulls are evaluated at 8-10 months on growth, muscling structural soundness and disposition.  Those that won't make outstanding bulls enter the beef program
* Heifers are culled at yearling on structural, growth, carcass (ultrasound) and disposition. 
* Heifers are culled again at 16-20 months.  Any open heifers at this point enter the beef program.  In this way, we are building generations of heifer fertility into our genetic lines.
